Paula Rego is an artist whose work is not comfortable. She has delved into her own experiences and throughout her life has shown us painted images as real as they are harsh of women just after an abortion, of girls interacting with their dog that in turn symbolizes the man, dolls that she had made to serve as models, etc. She is a student of classical art but her eyes were completely contemporary. She began her artistic career in the opposite way to her contemporaries, encountering abstraction and arriving at paintings of a realistic nature at the end of her life. With accurate brushstrokes and strokes that show how good a draughtsman she was, Paula Rego has left us a body of work that makes us reflect on the human condition. This is a portrait that sums up a large part of her production, with Rego herself becoming one of the dolls in her own work.
