Collection: Solana's masks

Inspired by the artist's fascination with Solana's work, this collection was born from a chance encounter with real masks at a Madrid exhibition. Villarán, with his characteristic expressive approach, photographed these masks and, some time later, discovered in them a profound connection with the faces he has been painting for years. Thus begins this series: as a continuation, but also as an evolution.

What was initially a faithful interpretation of these masks—rendered in shades of blue, reflecting his current creative period—transformed into a broader exploration. Villarán began incorporating popular masks from different cultures, reinterpreting them with a grotesque, symbolic, and profoundly human perspective.

Solana's Masks mirror our multiple identities: those we wear at work, in the family, at parties, or in mourning. Painted in oil on canvas and in a small format, each work becomes a visual metaphor for life in society, under an aesthetic as disturbing as it is poetic.
