A work of art for charity: “Vánitas DANA Valencia”
On October 29, 2024, a DANA (Isolated Upper-Level Depression) dumped torrential rains on eastern Spain, causing rivers and ravines to burst their banks and flooding, causing particularly devastating flooding in the province of Valencia. The consequences were tragic, and the impact was profoundly human.
In the face of this catastrophe, society reacted with a wave of solidarity. Volunteers organized themselves to help in the affected municipalities, delivering supplies, cleaning up mud and debris, and lending a helping hand where it was most needed. The art world also responded.
Antonio García Villarán, motivated by this emergency, created the #artistasconvalencia initiative, encouraging artists from around the world to donate works whose sales would go entirely to the victims. He painted a large-format piece entitled "Vánitas DANA Valencia," a work laden with symbolism and hope: oranges as a Mediterranean emblem, a vertical composition suggesting overcoming adversity and rebirth, and a bat as a tribute to the city of Valencia.
The creation of the work was shared live through several sessions on her Instagram account, a gesture of closeness and commitment. Once completed, an international raffle was held with €10 tickets for all those who wished to participate, regardless of where they were in the world.
The drawing was held on November 25, 2024 , and the winner was Ángeles Centeno , from Barcelona. She was so excited that she even made renovations to her home to install the painting. In addition, all raffle participants received a high-quality copy of the work for personal, non-profit use, as a thank you for their generosity.
The total amount raised was €8,298.04 , donated entirely to the "A Childhood Without Mud" project by FAMPA-València and the Gonzalo Anaya Confederation , which strives to guarantee a dignified, safe, and educational environment for children affected by the DANA. This charity fund will be used to organize camps with recreational activities and psychological support for schoolchildren, as well as to cover materials and basic needs for the damaged schools.
FAMPA-València expressed its sincere gratitude and confirmed that the donation has been received, highlighting the value of this artistic action as a gesture of humanity, social commitment, and collective hope.
