Louise Bourgeois. The Spider Woman
Louise Bourgeois. The Spider Woman
This work is the first in the “Women Artists” series to pay tribute to one of my references in recent art history.
Louise Joséphine Bourgeois (December 25, 1911 – May 31, 2010) was a French-born American artist and sculptor. Known for her spider sculptures, which earned her the nickname "Spider Woman", she is one of the most important artists in contemporary art. Her largest spider sculpture, titled Maman, has been exhibited in numerous locations around the world, and stands at over 30 feet (9.27 m) tall.
In the 1940s, after moving to New York with her husband, Robert Goldwater, she became interested in sculpture.
Recognized as the founder of Confessional Art, her works refer to the human figure, and its fragments, expressing themes such as betrayal, anxiety and loneliness. Her work was purely autobiographical and was inspired by her childhood trauma caused by the discovery of the affair between her father and her nanny.
