Yellow Self-Portrait
Yellow Self-Portrait
This work belongs to my yellow period. At that time I used heavy brown cardboards that were also used in life painting classes at the Santa Isabel de Hungría Faculty of Fine Arts.
As I was very influenced by the German Expressionists, including Kirchner, I painted compulsively and tried to achieve the most with the least.
This self-portrait is painted from life with a mirror placed on the floor. Hence the perspective.
The brushstrokes are thick and heavily impastoed. I particularly remember the yellow colour of the face, as it was a very expensive tube of paint that I bought when I didn't even have money for anything. I was trying to get the most luminosity out of the wide range of yellows I was using. Every time I put a little of that colour on the palette it was like working with diamonds.
This is a very wild self-portrait. It is alive. It has a sharp look that is only resolved with two brushstrokes of Prussian blue. It is a mixture of drawing and painting that, without a doubt, still feeds me today.
