The Andalusian couple. Allegory XX.
The Andalusian couple. Allegory XX.
This work shows a couple where the man has a bull's skull for a head and the woman, who is carrying him in her arms, has a cow's head made of esparto grass. On their lap they have the head of a dog, a symbol of kindness and fidelity, and she places her wooden hand on his heart. There are three white gloves, three reeds, a wicker basket, a box of wine and an empty bottle that is covered by the foot of the bull-man. He is dressed in black, she in soft, brightly coloured fabrics brought from other parts of the world. They do not cast a shadow. Both are bathed in the same pink light that brings some colour to this sombre image. Now it is up to you to interpret the scene.
